OUR HISTORY

Milan Baptist Church was constituted in March 1912.  The original building was constructed on the site of the old auditorium on land donated by Morgan Cook and R.C. Chambers.  Reverend W.D. Dewell was the first pastor.

New Sunday School rooms were added to the building in 1928.

In 1940, the Church building was destroyed by fire.  Services were held in the Milan City School until a new building was constructed.  The first service in the newly constructed building was held on June 29, 1941.  The following year, in Spring 1942, the first revival was hosted and 21 new members were added.

The Church purchased a house and dedicated it as a pastorium in October 1942.

More additions to the buildings were added around 1962, and in 1965, property adjacent to the Church was purchased.

During the years from 1972 – 1984, tennis courts and fencing were completed and a new sanctuary with a seating capacity of 300 was proposed and built.  Groundbreaking for the new sanctuary was in June 1978.  On December 24, 1978, the cornerstone was laid containing a capsule of important information.  The dedication services for the new building were held on February 11, 1979.

In 1980, the former sanctuary and Sunday School buildings were roofed and bricked to match the new building.  It was dedicated to the memory of W.C. McCranie on May 4, 1980.

During the late 1980’s, the practice of broadcasting the Sunday Morning Service on the radio was began and the Church continues the broadcast today.

Phase 1 of the new Sunday School rooms was completed in September 2000.

In December 2004, additions including the walkway, shelter, and ramp to the Social hall were completed.
